For prizes at Sarah's shower, my sister and I decided to give out potted succulents and hand painted tea towels. We packaged both in blue berry baskets, and I have to admit they were pretty cute! I might have to make a few more for myself! The cut celery makes such a pretty flower shape! These were fun to give out at the shower but they would also be fun gifts for other occasions if you are looking for a budget friendly idea. Since I already had some supplies on hand, they worked out to be about $2 each.
Supplies Needed:
- Flour sack towels or tea towels
- Head of Celery
- Sharp Knife
- Fabric Paint
- Foam Paintbrush
- Fine tip paintbrush
- Paint Palette (or use an old plate)
Directions:
Lay the your towel down on a flat surface with a piece of cardboard underneath to protect your surface.
On a cutting board, cut the head of celery straight across to make it shorter until you like the shape and size of the "flower".
Pour some paint onto your palette, mix until you reach desired shade (I mixed red & white for the larger flowers, pink for the smaller flowers and green & white mixed for the vines.) Using the foam paint brush, apply paint to the ends of the celery and stamp onto fabric. Repeat as needed to achieve desired pattern. To make a 2nd smaller flower, cut the head of celery shorter and follow the same painting technique. Once the flowers are complete, free hand the leaves and vines on with the fine tipped paintbrush.
Allow the paint to dry per directions on the paint bottle, steam with an iron if specified. I let mine dry for 3 days before washing and drying on regular settings and the paint did not run or wash out at all. Iron if desired, I personally liked the somewhat crinkled look.
Put to good use or wrap as a gift for a friend.
