When we were in Spokane for Thanksgiving, I noticed my parents were sprouting some lentils - they just kind of did their thing sitting there on the drying rack. It looked easy enough, so when we got home I decided to give it a go. Step one, text mom and ask for more detailed instructions...
I found a sprouting lid on Amazon (seriously, what do they not have?), that seemed easier than messing around with cheesecloth or trying to custom make something. Then I bought a few lentils at Whole Foods in the bulk section. To start I just bought about a quarter of a cup for 20 cents. Definitely a cheap experiment.
I placed the lentils in the bottom of a mason jar, covered them with water and let them soak for around 6 hours. Then I drained the water out and tipped the jar at a diagonal on it's side, so any excess water could drain out and still keeping it open to air. Then for 3 days after that you are supposed to rinse them with water twice a day.
And then you have sprouts! Simple and very inexpensive (my favorite combo). I'm excited to use these in all sorts of dishes - salads, sauted with garlic, soups, noodle dishes. I'd also like to experiment with sprouting other things as well, I used to love alfalfa sprouts when I was a kid!
What about you... Any experiments in the kitchen recently? What's on your kitchen windowsill?
