Lucy & the Tulips

Last weekend we took a little family road trip up north to visit the Tulip Festival. Since it was the last weekend, there were only a few tulip fields left. But this also meant that the line were short and the crowds were small! We visited Roozengaard for the first time. I had no idea that in addition to some amazing fields of tulips, they also have an incredible garden so that you can view all the different varieties of tulips that they have available. It was SOOO beautiful. We visited on a rainy day, but the sun peaked out several times. It was actually a perfect day to take photos, and I had fun breaking out my SLR for the first time in awhile.

Taking Lucy there was quite the experience. It is one thing to see something beautiful with your own eyes, and quite another to watch a little child get excited about something they have never seen before. Lucy was pretty excited by all the pretty colors. I had trouble photographing her because she was always so intently staring at the flowers.

It was an awesome, awesome day. I'm so glad we went and hope we make time every year to visit the tulip fields! I hope you enjoyed looking at my photos. I took 200+ pictures, so I did not share all of them, of course. Now, I'm signing off to enjoy this beautiful Spring day. I hear it will be over 80 degrees in Seattle today! I can't wait.

WALLFLOWER DISPLAY

Today I wanted to share this cute little wallflower display with you guys! Last weekend, I was talking with my friend Aileen about adding 3D items to gallery walls. I think this adds the perfect dose of "3D" to this little wall in my bedroom. Just enough texture and shape to break it up a little bit. 

This was super easy and fun to put together, and even better yet, preserves two different memories - all rolled into one cute little wall display. The mini cardboard boxes I got on Valentine's Day from Joe (they were full of Theo's caramels at the time - does that guy know the way to my heart or what?). The scabiosa pods were in my bouquet from Sarah's wedding last summer. Sarah actually wrote a whole post about scabiosa pods awhile back. They sure are fun little flowers!

Here's the basic directions if you'd like to make your own. Staple two mini boxes together, I offset mine by about an inch. Pick out some acrylic paint colors that look awesome together and paint the inside of the boxes. After the paint is dry, add your scabiosa pods to the inside. Trim the stems down so they fit snugly inside. Secure in place with a dab of glue. For the one sticking out of the top, I just punched a hole in the top of the box with my crop-a-dile and slid the flower into place. If you don't have scabiosa pods on hand, you could also use billy balls. I've even seen tutorials around for making faux billy-balls.

Inspired by Fall Flowers

Today's post is all about the flowers of fall! I'm loving looking at all these different autumn arrangements, the bold reds and oranges and yellows... Gorgeous! You might have seen my Inspired by Sunflowers post? I just can't get enough of these color combinations! Add some purples, or blues, or browns and greens; sure makes for some breathtaking bouquets! Check this one out: I love the blue thistles and ribbon combined with the blue hydrangeas and orange dahlias!

This bouquet is so bold and beautiful! I LOVE those dark purples in addition to the reds and yellows of fall!

Another trend I've been seeing a lot is using boughs of leaves as decoration. What do you think of this idea? I'm loving the look that colorful fall leaves add to a table setting!

Bachelor Buttons and Birch Bark

One of the weddings I did flowers for this summer was for a good friend Julie and her husband Kevin! Their gorgeous ceremony and reception were at Commellini's; its history and awesome setting made the perfect location for Julie and Kevin's wedding! Today I'm sharing some photos of the flowers... 

Julie wanted blue incorporated in her bouquet. I used bachelor buttons that she grew at her house, and added blue thistle, montecasino, and blue cornflowers. I also added silver brunia, hypericum berries, scabiosa pods, off-white roses, diosma and eucalyptus to give the bouquets the natural, rustic look she wanted. I love how they turned out!

I wrapped all the bouquets with birch bark that Kevin and Julie got from the trees on their property. Kevin drilled holes in three pennies with the years of their birthday's and the year their relationship began, and I tied them around Julie's bouquet with twine. 

For the boutonierres I put together pinecones with evergreen sprigs. I wrapped Kevin's with the birch bark I used for Julie's bouquet. Take a look:

Inspired by Sunflowers

Sunflowers... They remind me of the country, and working at Greenbluff in high school. And eating sunflower seeds. But I've never really considered them as a wedding flower. I'm trying to change that, since I've seen some awesome sunflower arrangements lately! In fact, I recently incorporated sunflowers and viking daisies, the 'mini sunflower look-alike' in a wedding recently, and loved the effect! I think they're growing on me! 

With that said, isn't this bouquet spectacular!? I love the simple-ness of the sunflowers wrapped in raffia! And those flowers look absolutely perfect! If anyone needs a wedding florist and just loves sunflowers, PLEASE let me know! I would love to recreate something like this! :)

I'm loving the look of sunflowers mixed with other flowers.. like roses, green hydrangeas, and anything blue! Isn't the contrast with the blue hydrangea and those blue dresses gorgeous!?

Of all the sunflower boutonierre photos I looked at, these stood out to me the most. I really didn't know about sunflower boutonnieres at first, they're just so... big! But I think for this wedding, this boutonierre is perfect! I'm loving it!

So last but not least.. The cake! I must admit.. some of the sunflower cake photos I looked at were kind of funny looking. Too many sunflowers, too few sunflowers, etc. But this rustic sunflower cake is perfect!
